Subject: What's so wrong about talking to yourself?

9:39 PM 8/22/06 · The first time I saw someone talking on an ear attachment to a cellphone I thought they were talking to themself; I was on the opposite side from that attachment. It wasn't a totally out there assumption...working at Barnes & Noble we had a number of mentally challenged & homeless folks that came in and had long discussions, to yelling arguments, with the shelves and furniture, and sometimes nothing we could see. I've never had a problem with it really, though it's got increasingly difficult to tell who's crazy and who's on the phone the more advanced and tiny these devices have become.

The talking to yourself thing, though, is something I've never totally seen as a bad thing. I mean, it makes a sort of sense when you think about it. You've got a good conversation ahead of you, lots of common points of interest, and you will certainly not be outmatched by your partner. I have chatted myself up a storm...I can keep myself laughing for hours if need be. Though I usually tend to do this in private places I've noticed a tendency to do it more often since I lost my car.

I've a newfound respect for people that wander around the sidewalks and talk to no one inparticular.

What is the big deal with people talking to themselves? Sure, you got some nut yelling at buildings (the things I see working in San Francisco) every so often but who are they hurting? In many ways a good conversation, even if you're the only one in it, can be very soothing. It's not necessary to bust out the straightjackets every single time someone has a well deserved smile on their face for some point they just made that without their own help they might not ever have realized.

There's nothing wrong with lying to yourself so long as you don't lie to others.
